Geneva— On July 7, 2025, His Excellency Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC), led a delegation comprising MPTC officials and representatives from the Telecommunications Regulator of Cambodia to attend the World Summit on the Information Society 2025 (WSIS +20 High-Level Event 2025) in Geneva, Switzerland. This 2025 summit brought together all the international partners to review the achievements over the past 20 years since the first WSIS summit was held in Tunis in 2005. The event was attended by approximately 60 heads of state and government, ministers and deputy ministers; the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), senior representatives from UNESCO, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD); around 40 regulatory representatives, roughly 50 representatives from UN specialized agencies; and approximately 4,000 participants from various countries.
The High-Level Event 2025 also featured several side events, including the “AI for Good Global Summit 2025,” the “Forum Francophone sur la gouvernance du numérique et de l’IA,” and the “GIGA Connectivity Forum 2025,” all taking place from July 7 to 11, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland.
It is worth noting that the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was started two decades ago, at a time when the internet and the web were just starting to expand globally. The first summit took place in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2003, followed by the summit in Tunis, Tunisia, in 2005, which established a vision for an “information society” interconnected by the internet, dedicated to uplifting humanity, fostering inclusivity, and supporting sustainable development.
